Analysis of Barbiturates by UFLC Barbiturates act as central nervous system depressants, and produce effects that range from mild sedation to anesthesia. Barbiturates have a narrow therapeutic range and there have been many cases of intentional and accidental overdose. Barbiturates have largely been replaced by benzodiazepines due to lower potential for abuse and smaller chance of lethal overdose. Barbiturates are still widely used in surgical anesthesia and as an anticonvulsant. |
